Some three hundred of these jugs are known and have been described by Professor Frieda Vandenabeele. At present, it appears as though their distribution is restricted to Cyprus, and even there only from the western part of the island. They date to the couple of centuries between the later Cyprio-Archaic period and the Hellenistic period. Recent scholars have identified several workshops for the jugs, and claim that the production started at Marion (modern Polis-tis-Khrysokhou). The Ashmolean collection contain 6 Kore jugs; four from Marion (Polis-tis-Khrysokhou) and two from Kouklia (Palaopaphos). All but one (from Marion, AN1969.207) are from excavations by the Cyprus Exploration Fund. |
