Barrel jug (AN1885.366) Back to previous page

Barrel jug (AN1885.366)A magnificent example of a "Free Field" Bichrome barrel jug, with an extremely complex palmette pattern flanked by long-necked birds [AN1967.1088] and deer. The design, executed in black and red, is extremely reminiscent of a rich embroidery pattern. It is a version of the oriental "tree of life" motif. Both the detail and scale of the design are remarkable. This pot must have taken an enormous amount of skill and time to produce.

  Other Details:
Bichrome IV, c. 700 BC. Purchased in Larnaca, and probably from a tomb near there.
